What are the schools like in Burghfield Common?

For anyone buying or renting in Burghfield Common.

Good, and the parents already know it. Nine in ten graded schools across the district are good or better. None is inadequate. The area has one mainstream secondary and the primaries post solid maths. The schools are the one part of Burghfield Common nobody moves here and then complains about.

Around here, the two mainstream state primaries average a maths score of about 105 at the end of primary school. Two schools is a small base, so treat the figure as a sign of health rather than a league-table trophy, but it's a healthy one. Burghfield St Mary's C.E. Primary School carries the parish name, and the local list also includes Garland Junior School and Mrs Bland's Infant School. The Department for Transport's 2019 modelling puts the nearest primary about 14 minutes' walk from the average home. That's close enough for the school run to be a walk, which in a place this attached to its cars counts as a lifestyle choice.

At secondary level the area has one mainstream state school, and it posts a pupil-weighted Attainment 8 score of about 52. The Willink School is the secondary on the local list, with Theale Green School also among the named options nearby. The same 2019 modelling puts the nearest secondary about 24 minutes' walk away, or about nine minutes by car. With a single secondary, "choice" means choosing between the local school and a longer commute. Parents who spend Year 5 comparing prospectuses tend to end up where the map sent them anyway.

Ofsted's grades cover the whole of West Berkshire, not just this corner of it. Of the 23 settings with a published overall grade, Ofsted has rated 21 good or better, so more than nine in ten. Two are outstanding, two require improvement and none is inadequate. Another 42 settings in the authority carry no published overall grade yet, which says nothing about their quality either way. They haven't been graded, and that's all. For a district-wide picture, it's one of the steadier ones a buyer will find, and the estate agent's "excellent local schools" line is, for once, mostly accurate.

Two cautions before anyone signs anything. A school sharing the village name or sitting on the local list doesn't guarantee a place, and the admissions rules decide, not the distance your estate agent quoted. The phrase "within catchment" in a listing is a description of hope, not a legal right. Check the council's admissions criteria for the specific year you'll be applying, and check each named school's own latest Ofsted report instead of relying on the district-wide count.

Schools are one of Burghfield Common's real strengths: the district grades are consistently high, nothing is failing, and the local maths scores back that up. Families who move here for the classrooms are making one of the safer bets on this stretch of the Kennet valley.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
