What are the schools like in Brookmans Park?

For anyone buying or renting in Brookmans Park.

The schools around Brookmans Park are good, and the county around them is better still. There are five state primaries in the area. There is one state secondary. Nearly nine in ten graded schools across Hertfordshire are rated good or better. Primary choice is easy, and families have to start thinking hard at age eleven.

Around here, the five mainstream state primaries average about 105 on the end-of-primary maths assessment. Brookmans Park Primary School is the one with the village's name on it. St Mary's Church of England VA Primary School in Welham Green and Little Heath Primary School are also close by. For a village this size, that is a decent spread of primaries for the parents who drive the school run.

The secondary picture is narrower. The area has one mainstream state secondary, and its pupils average an Attainment 8 score of about 48. Chancellor's School is the local option, and Dame Alice Owen's School is also in the wider list. The area also has schools outside those state figures, Lochinver House School and Queenswood School among them, for families with the fees and the inclination. With only one state secondary in the area, the choice at eleven comes down to Chancellor's or a longer journey.

Across Hertfordshire, Ofsted has graded 203 of the county's 227 graded settings good or better, which is nearly nine in ten. Of those, 40 are outstanding, while 21 require improvement and 3 are inadequate. Those numbers describe the whole county, so they tell a parent what the wider pool looks like and nothing about the school at the end of the road.

Hertfordshire allocates school places by its published admissions rules, and a church school can set its own criteria, so living near a named school does not secure a place there. Get the admissions rules for the year your child applies and check how far from the gate the last child offered a place actually lived. Parents who paid near a million pounds for a house close to the right primary learn on offer day that the council counts the distance more carefully than the seller's brochure did.

Schools are one of Brookmans Park's real strengths. Primary is the easy part, and the effort goes into getting a secondary place.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
