Is Brockley a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Brockley.

Yes, Brockley is safe, and noticeably safer than the borough it belongs to. Its crime rate comes in about a third below the Lewisham average. Violence and sexual offences make up a smaller share of incidents than they do nationally. Anti-social behaviour makes up a larger one. The main nuisance here is disorder in the street, and the numbers on serious harm are comparatively low.

The Metropolitan Police recorded 3,721 crimes in Brockley in the year to May 2026, and the published rate comes to about 80 per 1,000 residents. That is roughly 34% below the Lewisham average. A buyer who filters out Lewisham on a property search is filtering out one of the calmer parts of the borough.

For the comparison, Lewisham as a whole records about 122 crimes per 1,000 residents over the same year. Brockley's 80 is the same council and the same police force with a much smaller count.

Brockley is also crowded. Population density averages about 10,700 people per square kilometre, unemployment is around 4% and about 10% of households are overcrowded by the census measure. These figures describe the kind of neighbourhood it is. Nothing here links them to the crime rate, and none of them is offered as the reason for it.

By type, the mix of crime has its own shape. Violence and sexual offences make up about 29% of recorded crime here, below the roughly 35% share nationally, and that category covers everything from serious assault to common assault without injury. Anti-social behaviour accounts for about 24%, against 16% nationally, and vehicle crime for about 9%, against 5%. Other theft makes up about 8%, close to the national 7%. Public order offences and criminal damage each come to about 5% locally, a little under their national shares of about 7%. In short, Brockley's crime leans towards disorder and parked cars, with serious personal harm less prominent than average.

What happens after a report is a separate question from how much crime there is, and the answer comes from the whole force. The Metropolitan Police charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 33rd of 42 forces in England and Wales. About 53% of its cases close with no suspect identified. The police's public crime map shows incidents street by street, so check the few roads around any address you are considering, since the district figure is spread across all of them. In more than half of reported cases, the investigation ends without anyone being identified.

Safety is one of Brockley's real strengths. For a crowded district inside a busy borough, it has a crime rate a third below its neighbours', and most of what does happen is nuisance rather than serious harm.
