Is Brixton Hill a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Brixton Hill.

Brixton Hill is about as safe as the rest of Lambeth, which on the crime figures puts it at the level of busy inner London and no worse. Its crime rate is a shade under the borough's. Violence makes up a smaller share of crime here than it does nationally. Street theft makes up a bigger one. Keep more of an eye on your bag than on your front door.

The Metropolitan Police recorded 11,082 crimes across Brixton Hill in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, a published rate of about 146 per 1,000 residents. That is roughly 3% below the average for the London Borough of Lambeth. A gap that size is close enough to call level with the borough.

Lambeth's own rate over the same year was about 151 crimes per 1,000 residents, against Brixton Hill's 146. Five crimes per thousand is a small gap between two busy parts of south London.

The numbers come from a dense, crowded part of London. The average population density across the neighbourhood is about 16,550 people per square kilometre, about 5% of working-age residents are unemployed, and about 11% of households are overcrowded. That many people on a short stretch of road between Brixton and Streatham Hill produces a lot of foot traffic, and with it more recorded incidents of every kind than a village gets.

The mix is mostly street crime. Violence and sexual offences, a broad legal category that includes common assault without injury and is the biggest category almost everywhere, make up about 24% of crime here, against 35% nationally. Anti-social behaviour is about 21%, against 16% nationally. Other theft (7% here, 7% nationally) and shoplifting (7% here, 8% nationally) run close to the national pattern. Theft from the person makes up about 6% of crime here against 2% nationally, and drug offences about 6% against 4%. The police.uk street-level map shows where incidents near a particular road are clustered, and it is worth a look for anyone choosing between a flat on the main road and one on a side street.

Reporting a crime is the easy part. The Metropolitan Police charges a suspect in about 10% of cases across London, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 33rd of 42 forces in England and Wales. About 53% of its cases close without a suspect identified. These are force-wide figures for the whole of London and measure what happens after a crime, so they say nothing about how likely one is on Brixton Hill. A stolen phone is more likely to turn up in an insurance claim than in court.

Brixton Hill is middling on safety. It is a busy piece of inner London with crime to match the borough around it, and its risks are mostly the street kind.
