Mostly renters in their thirties, and many of them live alone. About six in ten households rent. The typical resident is in their late thirties. About half the adults have a degree. A third of homes have one person in them. Most of Brentford is working age and living in a flat.
The 2021 census, the source for every population figure here, counted 27,667 people in 11,897 households in Brentford. About 38% of households own their home, 30% rent privately and 28% rent from the council or a housing association. Private and social renting are almost level, so the renters are two different groups living in the same blocks.
The median resident is 37, and about 37% of residents are aged 25 to 44. These are people who have got the job and not yet got the garden, and Brentford's housing is built for them.
Modelled household income was about £86,000 before tax in the financial year to March 2023, or about £57,000 after tax. That is an average over a place where the council and housing associations house nearly as many families as private landlords do, so it describes the middle of a wide spread and not many actual kitchens.
About 33% of households are one person, and about 9% are a pensioner living alone, a group within that third. Couples with children make up about 18% of households and lone parents about 14%. A third of households are one person, and the one- and two-bed flats were built with them in mind.
About 49% of residents aged 16 and over have a degree, and about 15% have no qualifications at all. Full-time students make up about 2%. Half the adults have a degree and about one in seven has no qualifications, a wide gap for one postcode district.
At the census, about 85% of Brentford residents described their health as good or very good, and about 5% as bad or very bad. Across the London Borough of Hounslow, deaths from preventable causes are better than the England average and smoking is similar to the England rate. Those two are borough-wide figures, not Brentford's own.
Just 89 people live in communal settings such as care homes, too few to change any of the shares above.
Brentford's population is below average in overall standing. It is young, highly qualified and well paid on average, but it is split between private and social renting, and a sizeable minority has no qualifications.
