Who lives in Bowerhill?

For anyone buying or renting in Bowerhill.

Bowerhill is home to settled, middle-aged homeowners who've stopped moving around. Three in four households own their home. The typical resident is in their mid-forties. Hardly anyone here is a student. It's a place people choose to stay in, not a stop on the way somewhere else.

Every population figure on this page comes from the 2021 Census unless it says otherwise. About 76% of households own their home, about 10% rent privately and about 13% rent from a social landlord. That's an owner-occupied place with a real share of social housing, and the renting that goes on is mostly social, not the buy-to-let churn you'd find somewhere busier.

The typical resident is 45, and about 22% of people are aged 25 to 44. Nobody under thirty is making Bowerhill younger. The people setting up their first homes have mostly done it somewhere else and moved here later.

The Office for National Statistics models gross household income, before tax, at about £63,600 for the financial year to March 2023, averaged across the surrounding area. That's a modelled figure for that year, not a figure for any particular household today. It fits a place of salaried jobs, detached houses and a second car on the drive.

About 23% of households are one person living alone, and about 11% are a single pensioner living alone. The pensioners are part of that 23%, not in addition to it. About 21% of households are couples with children and about 9% are lone parents. That's a real mix, not the family-only suburb an estate agent's photos would suggest. Some households are in the thick of bringing up children, some have already done it, and some are on their own.

About 27% of residents hold a degree-level qualification and about 14% hold no qualifications. Full-time students make up about 2% of the population. Those shares describe the mix, a village of engineers, office staff, tradespeople and retirees, more than any single type. There's no university here and no student lets to go with one.

About 84% of residents describe their health as good or very good. Across the Wiltshire council area, the rate of deaths considered preventable is better than the England figure, and smoking, at about 8% of adults, is similar to the England rate. Both of those are county-wide measures, not a reading for Bowerhill. In a county that does better than England on preventable deaths, the village sits among the healthier ends of that picture.

Only 12 residents live in communal settings such as care homes, compared with 5,429 in ordinary households. That's too few to change how any of the shares above should be read.

Bowerhill's residents are a steadier, better-off population than most places can claim, and settled, not young, is the reason for it.
