Is Bembridge a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Bembridge.

Yes, and the margin is not subtle. Just over a hundred recorded crimes across a whole year, across the whole village. The rate runs roughly 62% under the island's own. Whatever pushes the island average up is happening somewhere with something still open at midnight. Bembridge is not that somewhere, and the numbers are unambiguous about it.

Over the twelve months to May 2026, police recorded 113 crimes in Bembridge, giving a published rate of about 32 per 1,000 residents. That sits roughly 62% below the Isle of Wight average. Both are published figures as they stand, and the rate is calculated on its own statistical population base, so anyone reproducing it at home by dividing the count by the number of residents will get a different answer and conclude, wrongly, that someone is lying.

The comparison is worth seeing as two numbers rather than one percentage. The Isle of Wight as a whole records about 83 crimes per 1,000 residents. Bembridge records about 32. Same island, same force, same council, and a gap that is a matter of geography rather than policing.

The texture underneath is unremarkable in the way that tends to produce those numbers. Population density averages around 1,560 people per square kilometre across the area's neighbourhoods, unemployment runs at about 2%, and roughly 1% of households are overcrowded. None of those figures causes anything on its own, and it would be lazy to pretend otherwise. What they describe is a low-density village at the end of a road that goes nowhere else, with very little passing through it on the way to somewhere better.

The mix of what gets recorded comes with a caveat that matters more than the mix itself. The whole thing rests on 113 crimes spread across 11 categories, a base small enough that a handful of incidents shifts a share by several points from one year to the next. Holding that firmly: violence and sexual offences account for about 50% of Bembridge's recorded crime against roughly 35% nationally, a category that is a broad statutory grouping covering common assault without injury and one that tops the list almost everywhere. Anti-social behaviour sits at about 13% locally against roughly 16% nationally. Criminal damage and arson runs at about 7% locally and about 7% nationally, which is as close to identical as these comparisons come. Other theft is around 12% against roughly 7% nationally, public order about 8% against 7%, and burglary about 5% against 4%. Treat the set as a rough shape, not as a description of the village's character.

What happens after a report is a different question, and the crime rate does not answer it. Hampshire Constabulary, the force covering Bembridge, charged a suspect in about 9% of cases over the twelve months to May 2026, against roughly 12% nationally, placing it 38th of 42 forces. In around 35% of cases the file closed with nobody identified at all. Those are force-wide outcomes across a large area rather than anything specific to this village, and they measure the odds of a result rather than the odds of something happening to you in the first place. The two get blended constantly by people quoting one to argue about the other.

Safety is the strongest thing Bembridge has, and nothing else on the page comes near it. A village this quiet, this far from anywhere with a queue outside it, produces exactly the figures a nervous buyer wants and then goes on producing them year after year.
