Who lives in Bassingbourn?

For anyone buying or renting in Bassingbourn.

Bassingbourn is mostly families who own their home, with incomes good enough to cover two commutes, and it has more social housing than a village like this usually shows. Two-thirds own. One household in five rents from a council or housing association. The typical resident is about forty. The village is more mixed than its detached houses on the edge suggest.

About 65% of households in Bassingbourn own their home. About 20% rent from a council or housing association and about 13% rent privately, so social tenants outnumber private tenants, which is unusual for a commuter village. Investors renting out semis are scarce here.

The typical resident is 40, and about 27% of residents are aged 25 to 44. Forty is the age of someone with a mortgage, children at the village college and a parent who has started ringing more often.

The Office for National Statistics models gross household income for the surrounding area at about £70,000 for the financial year to March 2023, before tax, and averaged across a district wider than the village. With two salaries and no London fare, that is a comfortable income, although it is three years old and a long way from rich by Cambridge standards.

The 2021 Census, which supplies every population figure on this page, counts 2,703 people in 1,062 households. Couples with dependent children make up about 26% of households and lone parents about 11%. About 25% of households are one person living alone, and within that group about 12% of all households are a pensioner on their own. Families and people living alone are present in roughly equal numbers, because the village has the bungalows as well as the four-bedroom houses.

About 36% of adults hold a degree, about 15% have no formal qualifications and about 2% are full-time students. The village has graduates who commute into Cambridge for work living next to people who never needed a certificate to earn a living, and the full-time students mostly leave for university after sixth form.

Bassingbourn's population is ordinary for the area. It is a family village with good incomes and an unusually large share of social housing, without being especially wealthy or especially struggling.
