What's the area around Banwell like?

For anyone buying or renting in Banwell.

The area around Banwell is green, high, and properly rural. Open space begins under four hundred metres from the average front door. Half a dozen green spaces sit within a short walk. The village leans against the western end of the Mendip Hills, with the drained flatland of the Levels rolling out the other way. This is countryside that earns the word rather than borrowing it for a brochure.

Access to the outdoors is the standout feature. The typical home has roughly half a dozen green spaces within a kilometre, and the nearest is under four hundred metres away, so in a village this size nobody is far from somewhere to walk the dog or wear out the children. Water is closer still, with the average front door about two hundred and fifty metres from a pond, ditch or watercourse, a direct legacy of sitting on ground stitched together by drainage channels. Wet feet and long views come as a matched set here.

The landscape has a proper national designation standing behind the view. Part of the area falls inside the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the marker reserved for scenery worth protecting, and the hills rise straight from the edge of the village. There is no recorded ancient woodland across the patch, but the Mendip fringe carries the scenery on its own without needing the help.

The character is small-village Somerset, ringed by more of the same. Winscombe, Sandford, Locking and Worle all sit within easy reach, each a settlement in its own right rather than a bolt-on suburb, and the larger town of Weston-super-Mare anchors the western side for anyone who needs a supermarket and a high street. The history lies thick on the ground. Banwell Camp, an ancient hillfort, sits above the village, Banwell Caves cut into the hill, and a Roman camp rests in the nearby woods, so a walk in these hills is a walk across a few thousand years of other people having got there first. It is a place that rewards a decent pair of boots far more than a bus timetable.

For the outdoors, the area around Banwell is about as good as this corner of Somerset gets: hills on one side, water on the other, green space at the end of nearly every street. Buy here for the setting and the setting will not let you down.
