What are the schools like in Yalding?

For anyone buying or renting in Yalding.

Good, and the odds are on your side. Nine in ten graded schools across the county are good or better. The village has its own Church of England primary. A string of small village primaries sits along the river nearby. The harder part is choosing the secondary, because that choice gets made for you in Maidstone.

Ofsted has graded 245 schools and settings across Kent, and 221 of them are good or outstanding, roughly nine in every ten. Of those, 38 are outstanding. At the other end, 21 require improvement and 3 are inadequate. These are county-wide counts covering the whole local authority, not a tally of Yalding's own schools. A further 255 settings hold no published grade yet. That says nothing about their quality, only that no inspector has put a grade on them.

Naming a school is not the same as getting a place at it. Admissions are decided by the council's rules each year, and living near a school's gate improves your odds without guaranteeing anything. Parents who buy a house on the strength of a school's name and skip the admissions criteria sometimes learn the difference in an offer letter. Check this year's rules for the exact address before you exchange contracts.

The school carrying the village's name is Yalding, St Peter and St Paul Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School, which takes up most of the name board before it gets to the children. Laddingford St Mary's Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School serves the hamlet to the south. Wateringbury Church of England Primary School and Mereworth Community Primary School cover the villages to the north. For a small place, that is a generous choice of village primaries within a short drive, and three of the four are church schools.

Secondary is where Yalding's families split. The village falls in a comprehensive catchment, while a large share of local children travel to the grammar schools in Maidstone. Kent's selective system turns the year-five autumn into a household project, and plenty of families here plan their lives around the entrance test. If a grammar place is the goal, the transport run to Maidstone is part of the deal, so price it in along with the house.

Schools are one of Yalding's real strengths. The primaries are on the doorstep, the county's inspection record is strong, and the only hard work left is the secondary admissions forms.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
