Is Woodford Green a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Woodford Green.

Yes. Woodford Green is one of the safer parts of Redbridge, and the crime it does have is mostly aimed at property, and cars in particular. Its crime rate is about a quarter below the borough's. Violence makes up a smaller share of incidents than the national pattern. Vehicle crime makes up a bigger one. On most of these streets, the thing most likely to be broken into is parked outside.

The police recorded 4,724 crimes across Woodford Green in the year from June 2025 to May 2026. The published rate is about 76 crimes for every 1,000 residents, around 23% below the Redbridge average over the same period.

Side by side, Redbridge as a whole runs at about 100 crimes per 1,000 residents, against Woodford Green's 76. That gap is wide enough to show up in daily life. A buyer coming from elsewhere in the borough will notice the difference.

Woodford Green is a dense suburb, at about 6,880 people per square kilometre on average, with unemployment at about 3% and about 7% of households overcrowded. Those figures describe the kind of neighbourhood this is: busy, mostly employed and mostly roomy. None of them explains the crime rate, and nothing here links one to the other.

The crime mix, compared with England and Wales, makes the point more clearly. Violence and sexual offences, a broad legal category that includes common assault without injury, make up about 26% of crime here against about 35% nationally. Anti-social behaviour is about 19% here against 16%, close to the national share. Vehicle crime is the outlier at about 12%, against 5% nationally. Shoplifting is about 10% against 8%, other theft about 7% against 7%, and burglary about 6% against 4%. Thieves in Woodford Green are after things they can sell, and a car is easier to get at than a house. The one useful check is to look at the street-level crime map on the police's public website for the road you are considering, paying particular attention to vehicle crime, and to ask whether the house has off-street parking or only a kerb.

Getting a case to court is a separate matter from how much crime there is, and it depends on the force, which covers the whole capital. The Metropolitan Police Service charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 33rd of 42 forces. About 53% of its cases close with no suspect identified. These are London-wide figures and they don't measure Woodford Green's streets. They do mean that if your car is broken into, you should expect a crime reference number and an insurance claim more than an arrest.

Safety is one of Woodford Green's real strengths, with crime well below the rest of the borough and violence below the national pattern. The main thing to plan for is where the car sleeps at night.
