What's the area around Witham like?

For anyone buying or renting in Witham.

The area around Witham is greener and wetter than a commuter town has any right to be. The nearest park is a minute or two from most front doors. Water is barely further. A national cycle route runs through the middle of town. Witham's best feature is the bit nobody puts on the station sign.

Green space is everywhere in Witham. The average home is roughly 150 metres from the nearest park or green space and has about 18 within a kilometre. For most households a walk in the green starts at the end of their own road.

The River Brain runs through the town and joins the Blackwater on the outskirts, and the average home is about 300 metres from water of some kind, with about 42 bodies of water within a kilometre. A town known mostly for its trains turns out to be mostly ponds, streams and riverbank.

National Cycle Route 16 passes through Witham, about 460 metres from the average home, and about 60% of postcodes are close to the network. That puts a traffic-free ride out of town within reach of most households.

The rated-premises list counts 188 shops, 16 pubs and 11 restaurants in Witham. Sixteen pubs and eleven restaurants means the town drinks out more often than it dines out.

Braintree District recorded fine-particle pollution of about 7 micrograms per cubic metre in 2024, a district-wide figure.

The countryside around Witham is where the history ended up. The Knights Templar were granted Cressing Temple in 1136, and its Barley Barn and Wheat Barn are now listed, so two of the best-known buildings near Witham are farm sheds. Faulkbourne Hall, Braxted Park and the parkland at Terling Place sit within easy reach, along with villages such as Rivenhall, Kelvedon, Wickham Bishops and Hatfield Peverel. Closer in, the Church of St Nicolas marks Chipping Hill, the Saxon settlement Witham grew from, about half a mile north of the Roman road.

Witham's neighbourhoods hold about 75,000 square metres of private garden for every 1,000 residents. That is a measure of the outdoor space people own, separate from the parks, and it backs up what the housing suggests: most Witham households have a garden of their own as well as a park nearby.

The business rates valuation list records 800 premises in Witham, and shops, warehouses, workshops and offices are the largest groups. They are premises on a list, which is a different thing from businesses trading today. The warehouse and workshop count is a reminder that Witham is a working town, and people do more here than catch trains out of it.

Of the 138 food outlets with a hygiene rating in Witham, about 78% hold the top score and about 1% sit at the bottom of the scale. The places to eat out may be few, but they keep their kitchens clean.

No protected landscape overlaps Witham: no area of outstanding natural beauty, no site of special scientific interest, and no ancient woodland. Its green space is the everyday kind, parks, riverbank and cycle routes, made for using.

Witham's surroundings are one of its real strengths. The park, the river and the cycle route are all closer to the front door than the station is.
