Is Wimbledon, London a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Wimbledon, London.

Wimbledon is about as safe as the rest of Merton, with slightly more on the charge sheet. Crime runs a little above the borough rate. Violence makes up a smaller share than it does nationally. Shoplifting and nuisance make up a bigger one. This is a town centre with a suburb attached, and the numbers reflect the town centre.

Police.uk recorded about 82 crimes per 1,000 residents in Wimbledon in the year to May 2026, around 8,375 offences in all. That is published as a rate for the area's own neighbourhoods, and it sits roughly 5% above the average for the local authority.

The Merton average is about 78 per 1,000 over the same twelve months, so Wimbledon is about four crimes per thousand people ahead of its own borough. The difference is that Wimbledon is where Merton goes to shop, catch a train and go out at night. The Common and the residential streets around it do not add much to the count.

Wimbledon is a densely built area, with about 10,600 people per square kilometre on average across its neighbourhoods. Unemployment is about 3% and about 7% of households are overcrowded, both low for inner suburban London. This is a crowded, well-off area, and the crime here is what a crowded, well-off area gets.

Violence and sexual offences make up about 25% of recorded crime in Wimbledon, against about 35% across England and Wales. That category covers everything from serious assault to common assault without injury, and here it is a noticeably smaller slice than average. Anti-social behaviour is about 23% against 16% nationally, and shoplifting about 12% against 8%. Vehicle crime is about 8% against 5%, other theft about 8% against 7%, and public order about 6% against 7%. Wimbledon is the main commercial centre of the borough, and some of its visitors take more home from the shops than the town's Privilege Card was ever meant to allow. If you are looking at a flat above the shops near the Broadway, check the street on the police.uk map, since the late-night end of the town centre is where nuisance reports collect.

After a crime is reported, the Metropolitan Police charges a suspect in about 10% of cases across London, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 33rd of 42 forces. In about 53% of its cases over the year to May 2026, nobody was identified. Those are force-wide numbers covering the whole of the capital, and they tell you what happens after a report, which is a separate question from how often crime happens here.

Wimbledon is middling on safety, a little busier than Merton and with less violence than the national mix. The busy part is the shopping streets, and anyone buying near them should expect to see it from the window.
