Is Wilstead a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Wilstead.

Yes, Wilstead is a safe area, and its crime rate is comfortably below that of the council it belongs to. Recorded crime is about a fifth lower than the council-wide rate. The volume across a year is a few hundred incidents for the whole area. Joblessness and overcrowding are rare. The area would need to try quite hard to produce a crime wave.

Published police figures put recorded crime across the Wilstead area at about 53 per 1,000 residents in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, roughly 19% below the Central Bedfordshire average. That year produced 221 recorded crimes across the area this page covers, which takes in Haynes, Haynes Church End and Houghton Conquest as well as Wilstead itself. The rate uses its own published population base, so it shouldn't be checked against a headcount on the back of an envelope.

Central Bedfordshire as a whole recorded about 65 crimes per 1,000 residents over the same year, against Wilstead's 53. That gap is the whole comparison, and it favours the village.

The neighbourhood behind those numbers has few of the pressures people usually look for. Unemployment is about 2% and overcrowded homes about 2%. Population density averages about 1,130 people per square kilometre across the small census areas that make up the parish, which reflects the built-up village cores more than the fields around them. These figures describe the place. They don't explain the crime rate, and nothing in them shows that one causes the other.

The mix of crime needs care, because the totals are small enough that a handful of incidents moves a share by several points. Over the year to May 2026, violence and sexual offences made up about 43% of the area's recorded crime, against about 35% across England and Wales. That category is the largest almost everywhere and includes common assault without injury. Anti-social behaviour was about 21% against 16% nationally, vehicle crime about 8% against 5%, and criminal damage and arson about 7%, level with the national 7%. Other crime was about 5% against 2%, and burglary about 5% against 4%. On a base of 221 crimes, those gaps could close or widen next year on a few reports, so they don't tell you much about the village's character. Four extra cars broken into is enough to rewrite a pie chart. For a specific street, the force's published crime map shows what has been reported nearby month by month, and it is more use to a buyer than any share above.

Bedfordshire Police, the force covering the area, brought a charge in about 10% of outcomes recorded over the twelve months to May 2026, against about 12% nationally, and ranks 36th of 42 forces on that measure. About 38% of its cases were closed with no suspect identified. Those are force-wide figures for the whole of Bedfordshire, set by how the force works its caseload, and they say nothing about Wilstead's streets. They tell you less about how likely you are to be a victim and more about what follows if you are.

Wilstead is a low-crime corner of Bedfordshire, and its weak spot is the force's charge rate across the county, which has nothing to do with the village itself.
