The schools around Whitechapel are very good, and this is the part of the place that surprises people. Nearly every graded school is good or better. About a third are outstanding. None are failing. A neighbourhood better known for its traffic and its crime figures turns out to be a strong place to be eleven.
Ofsted has graded 39 schools in the Tower Hamlets count, and 37 of them are good or better, which is almost all of them. Thirteen are outstanding, 24 are good, two require improvement and none are inadequate. Another 44 settings in the authority have no published grade yet, which says nothing either way about them. Parents who move here expecting to fight their way out of a weak school list tend to spend the first year looking for the catch.
Distance is the other gift. The Department for Transport's 2019 modelling put the nearest primary about four minutes' walk from the average home and the nearest secondary about seven, and in an area where about 70% of households have no car, that matters more than any league table. Places are handed out under Tower Hamlets' published admissions rules, so living round the corner from a school is a good start and nothing more, and church schools can weigh faith criteria too. The council's admissions booklet is the document to read for the exact rules and how far the last offer reached in recent years, before you pick a street for its school.
A few names say something about the area. St Paul's Whitechapel Church of England Primary School carries the place in its name, and Christ Church CofE School is another of the church primaries nearby. At secondary level, Mulberry School for Girls is close, as are Swanlea School and Stepney All Saints Church of England Secondary School, the latter pointing east towards Stepney. Around them sit a spread of other primaries and secondaries across Spitalfields and Stepney, plus independent and faith settings. Several schools nearby have closed in recent years, so a name passed on by a neighbour is worth checking against the current list.
Queen Mary University of London is inside the area too, which means the school run and the student run share the same pavements. One group is in uniform, and the other has stopped wearing a coat on principle.
For a buyer with children, schools are one of the clearest reasons to choose Whitechapel. The local list is strong, close and a short walk from most front doors.
