Wheatley's schools are good, and the county around them is better than most parents dare hope. About nine in ten graded schools in Oxfordshire are good or better. The village has a primary school and a secondary school of its own. Both are within a walk of most front doors. The hard part here is the admissions process.
Across Oxfordshire, Ofsted has graded 108 of 121 schools as good or outstanding, close to nine in every ten. Eleven of those are outstanding. At the other end, ten require improvement and three are inadequate. Another 151 settings in the county have no published grade yet, and they sit outside those counts entirely. A county-wide grade profile tells you the odds across Oxfordshire. It tells you nothing about the one school your child ends up at. Parents here still read a "requires improvement" report as if it were a diagnosis.
Wheatley Church of England Primary School carries the village's name, and Wheatley Park School is the local secondary, which saves a lot of families a long bus ride at eleven. Places at both are allocated by Oxfordshire County Council under its published admissions rules, so buying the house nearest the gate does not, on its own, get your child in. Look up how far from each school the last child offered a place lived in recent years. The county council publishes that distance, and it is a better guide than the walk on the map. The Department for Transport's 2019 model puts the nearest primary about 15 minutes' walk from the average Wheatley home and the nearest secondary about 20. Horspath Church of England Primary School serves the village of the same name on the Oxford side. John Watson School and the two Chilworth House schools are also in the area, and the remaining primaries in the surrounding villages make up the rest of the choice. Families who chose the house for the primary and assumed the secondary would sort itself out find out in the spring their eldest turns ten whether it did.
Schools are one of Wheatley's real strengths: a primary and a secondary on the doorstep, inside a county where good is normal. The quality is there. Getting the offer letter is the part you cannot buy.
