Is Upper Holloway a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Upper Holloway.

Yes, by Islington standards Upper Holloway is one of the calmer parts of the borough. Its crime rate is noticeably lower than the borough's. Nuisance is a bigger share of what gets reported here than it is nationally. Violence is a smaller share. For an inner London neighbourhood that's a decent record, and people judging it by Holloway Road's reputation are judging the wrong stretch.

Police.uk records about 164 crimes per 1,000 residents in Upper Holloway for the year to May 2026, about 13% below the Islington average. That is 8,452 recorded crimes over the year. On its own the number sounds a lot. Against the rest of the borough it doesn't.

Islington's rate over the same year is about 188 crimes per 1,000 residents, against about 164 in Upper Holloway. The borough includes some of the busiest streets in inner London, so being below its average is a modest achievement. It still counts, and it puts the area on the better side of a borough most people wouldn't call quiet.

Upper Holloway is crowded. The average neighbourhood here houses about 16,700 people per square kilometre, unemployment runs at about 5%, and about 10% of households are overcrowded. That describes a dense, busy part of the city where plenty of people live in not much space. None of it explains the crime figure, and the figure comes in below the borough's anyway.

Anti-social behaviour is the biggest category here, at about 30% of recorded crime against about 16% nationally. That is the one share that clearly stands out, and it covers noise, nuisance and rowdiness more than harm. Violence and sexual offences come next, at about 24%, well below the national share of about 35%. That category covers a wide legal range, including common assault where nobody was injured. Shoplifting accounts for about 8% and other theft about 7%, both close to the national shares. Vehicle crime is about 6% against 5% nationally, and public order about 6% against 7%. Taken together, the area has more nuisance and less violence than the national mix. Police.uk publishes recorded crime on a street-level map, so look at the blocks immediately around the flat you want, because a busy junction and a back street a few minutes away can produce very different pictures.

The Metropolitan Police Service charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 33rd of 42 forces in the year to May 2026. That is a force-wide figure, and it says nothing about Upper Holloway's streets in particular. About 53% of the Met's cases close with nobody identified as a suspect. That tells you about the chances of a report going anywhere. How likely you are to need to make one is a separate question, and the crime rate answers it.

Upper Holloway is safer than most of the borough around it. What it mainly has is nuisance, and the picture is reasonably good for a crowded corner of inner London.
