What are the schools like in Uckfield?

For anyone buying or renting in Uckfield.

Good, and the choice at secondary is simple because there's only one. About four in five graded schools across the county are good or better. The primaries are within walking distance of most homes. One secondary serves the whole town. For most families, Uckfield's schools are the least of their problems.

Ofsted has published an overall grade for 67 schools and settings across the East Sussex authority, and 54 of them are rated good or better, which is roughly four in every five. Seven are outstanding and 47 are good, while seven require improvement and six are inadequate. Those counts cover the whole county, not just Uckfield, so they describe the system your child enters rather than the gate you'll stand at. Another 84 settings across the authority have no published overall grade yet. That means they haven't been graded, not that they're bad.

The usual rule applies here as everywhere: a school's name on this page doesn't put your child on its register. Admissions are handled by the authority under its own rules, and the only way to know where a particular house sits is to check the specific address against the current arrangements before you commit. The estate agent's phrase "in catchment for" is a description of hope, not a legal status.

At secondary level, the choice in town is Uckfield College, the town's only secondary. That makes the decision easy and the stakes clear: families who don't like it are choosing a longer journey, not a different school down the road. Transport modelling from 2019 puts the average secondary journey at about 22 minutes on foot, 19 minutes by public transport and nine by car. That's a walk most teenagers will complain about and do anyway.

Primary options are closer. Harlands Community Primary & Nursery School, Rocks Park Primary School, Manor Primary School and St Philip's Catholic Primary School all serve the town, and the modelled average walk to a primary is about eight minutes. The surrounding villages have their own small schools, including Framfield Church of England Primary School and Nutley Church of England Primary School, for families buying in Framfield or Nutley who'd rather their five-year-old didn't commute.

Uckfield has had a school closure before: the town's old grammar school shut in 1930, and its building still stands on Church Street. The current schools are doing better than that one did.

Uckfield's schools are one of the strongest reasons to move here. The only decision most parents need to make is which house, because the schools come with the town.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
