Is Twyford, Berkshire a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Twyford, Berkshire.

Twyford is almost exactly as safe as Wokingham. Crime runs at about the borough rate. Unemployment barely registers. Overcrowding is close to zero. That makes Twyford ordinary for the borough, and ordinary in Wokingham is a comfortable place to be.

In the year to May 2026, police recorded 420 crimes in Twyford, and the published rate came to about 47 per 1,000 residents. That puts it roughly 2% below the Wokingham average. A difference that small is a tie, not a trend. Twyford is neither a trouble spot nor a crime-free village, and anyone who calls it either has not looked at the numbers.

In the same year, the published rate for the whole Wokingham borough was about 48 per 1,000 residents. Put the two together, 47 in Twyford and 48 across the borough, and the gap is a single crime per thousand people. On crime, Twyford is typical of Wokingham, which is itself one of the calmer parts of Berkshire.

The kind of place behind these numbers is settled, not squeezed. The built-up area holds about 3,490 people per square kilometre, which is village housing, not tower blocks. Unemployment was about 2% at the 2021 census, and about 1% of households were overcrowded. Those figures describe the neighbourhood's texture, not the cause of any crime in it. The texture is detached houses and full employment.

The biggest category was violence and sexual offences, at about 28% of recorded crime in the year to May 2026. That is below the national share of about 35%, and it is the largest category almost everywhere because it includes common assault without injury. Shoplifting was next at about 26%, against about 8% nationally, so Twyford's shops take a larger share than most. Criminal damage and arson made up about 9% (7% nationally) and vehicle crime about 7% (5% nationally). Anti-social behaviour was about 9% against 16% nationally, and public order offences about 5% against 7%. The totals are small, so a few incidents can move any of these shares by several points. Read them as last year's pattern, not a permanent feature of the place.

Reporting a crime and seeing a charge are separate matters. Thames Valley Police, the force covering Twyford, charged a suspect in about 9% of cases in the year to May 2026, against about 12% nationally. That ranks it 37th of 42 forces. About 37% of the force's cases were closed with no suspect identified. These are force-wide figures, not Twyford's own, and they measure what happens after a crime, not how likely one is. Whether a stolen bike comes back depends on Thames Valley's performance, not on the village.

Twyford is middling on safety, safe enough for most buyers and no safer than its borough. The shops have more reason to worry than the households do.
