Good, and easiest while the children are small. The primaries are within walking distance. Four in five graded schools across the county are rated well. Secondary means a bus or a lift. The early years are the simple part; the teenage years come with a timetable.
There are two state primaries in the area, and their pupils averaged a maths score of about 102 at the end of primary school. Ticehurst and Flimwell Church of England Primary School carries the village's name and a second village's with it, which tells you how far the catchment has to stretch to fill a classroom out here. Stonegate Church of England Primary School serves the southern end of the parish, and Wadhurst Church of England Primary School and Nursery is the option families look at over the parish line. The modelled walk to a primary is about 19 minutes, or about 8 by car, which makes this one of the few school runs in the High Weald that can be done in wellies.
Ofsted's picture covers the whole of East Sussex rather than Ticehurst alone. Of the 67 settings with a published grade, 54 are good or better, which is roughly four in five. Seven are outstanding, seven require improvement and six are inadequate. A further 84 settings have no published grade yet and say nothing either way. The county's schools are mostly sound, and the headline is decent without being a reason to move on its own.
Secondary is where the geography starts making decisions. The modelled journey is about 24 minutes by public transport and 16 by car, while the walk runs to nearly an hour and a half, so nobody's teenager is strolling in. Uplands Academy is the named state secondary within reach. Beyond the state sector, Bricklehurst Manor School and Sacred Heart School are among the other schools around the area, and The Mount Camphill Community sits on the list as a specialist setting rather than a mainstream choice.
A school near the house is not a place at the school. Admissions run on each school's own published rules, church schools can weigh criteria that a community school would not, and a small village intake can fill up long before the distance rule reaches your gate. Parents who buy the house first and read the admissions policy second tend to learn the order mattered. Check the arrangements for the year you need, for the address you are buying, before the offer goes in rather than after the offer letter arrives.
Schools are one of Ticehurst's real strengths, particularly at primary level, where the classroom is a walk away and the county's record stands up well. Plan the secondary journey early and the rest largely takes care of itself.
