What are the schools like in Thamesmead East?

For anyone buying or renting in Thamesmead East.

The schools around Thamesmead East are good, and most of them are close. Across the borough, five in six graded schools are good or better. Primary schools are a short walk away. The secondary is about a quarter of an hour on foot. Getting to school is easy here, and the hard part is getting a place.

Bexley has 36 schools and other settings with a published Ofsted grade, and 30 of them are rated good or outstanding, so the clear majority meet that bar. Five are outstanding. Five more are rated requires improvement and one is inadequate, so a family can't take a good school for granted, though the odds are strong. Another 39 settings in the borough have no published overall grade yet. That gap reflects when the inspectors last called and says nothing about the teaching.

The schools nearest the area include Northwood Primary School and Parkway Primary School. Harris Garrard Academy appears on both the primary and secondary lists, so one name may answer both questions for some families. That would cut down the open evenings. The Department for Transport's modelled journey times date from 2019. They put the nearest primary about six minutes' walk away for a typical home and the nearest secondary about 14 minutes on foot or 12 by public transport. A child can walk from the infants to the secondary years without needing a lift.

Bexley Council allocates places under its own published admissions rules, so buying a house near one of these schools doesn't secure a place there. The rules decide each year how far a place reaches, and that changes with the number of applicants. Ask the council for the furthest distance each school offered places from in recent years, and compare it with the house you're thinking of buying. A parent who reads the council's admissions document in the autumn has no surprises when the offers arrive in spring.

The schools are one of the things Thamesmead East does best. For most families, the only real uncertainty is the council's admissions letter.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
