Is Tenterden a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Tenterden.

Yes, safer than the borough around it. Crime runs about a seventh below the Ashford average. Unemployment barely registers. Almost nobody lives in an overcrowded home. Where Tenterden stands out, it is for damage to property, not danger to people.

Police records put Tenterden at about 70 crimes per 1,000 people in the year to May 2026, roughly 14% below the average for the Ashford local authority area. That covers 746 recorded crimes over the twelve months. Both are published figures for the area's statistical boundaries. The rate is calculated on those boundaries' own population, so dividing one figure by another won't reproduce it. The anxious buyer who types "Tenterden crime" into a search bar at midnight is reading a number that sits below the local norm.

For the comparison, the Ashford area as a whole runs at about 81 crimes per 1,000 people over the same year, against Tenterden's 70. That gap is modest but real. It puts Tenterden on the calmer side of its own borough, with Ashford town's busier streets in the same total, and nothing more dramatic than that.

The area averages about 2,160 people per square kilometre. About 2% of working-age residents are unemployed, and about 1% of households are overcrowded. That is the texture of the place: spread out, mostly in work and not packed in. Those figures describe the neighbourhood. They don't explain its crime, and it would be dishonest to pretend they did.

The mix is where Tenterden differs. Violence and sexual offences make up about 35% of recorded crime here, the same as the roughly 35% nationally. That category covers a wide legal range, down to common assault without injury, and it is the largest one almost everywhere. Anti-social behaviour makes up about 21% here against about 16% nationally. Criminal damage and arson take about 13% against about 7%, and other theft about 10% against about 7%. Shoplifting (about 5% against 8%) and public order offences (about 4% against 7%) run below the national share. So the categories that run high are mostly nuisance and damage, and the heavier-sounding category sits exactly at the national norm. A buyer who reads only the top line will worry about the wrong thing.

What happens after a report is a separate question, and it has a force-wide answer. Kent Police charges a suspect in about 16% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which ranks it 6th of 42 forces in England and Wales over the year to May 2026. About 36% of cases close with no suspect identified. That is the honest answer to whether they'll catch whoever did it. These are Kent Police's figures across the county, not Tenterden's own, and they say nothing about how likely a crime is here in the first place.

Tenterden is safer than most of its borough. Crime here is lower than the local norm, and what there is leans towards damage rather than danger.
