What are the schools like in Tangmere?

For anyone buying or renting in Tangmere.

One school in the village, everything else a drive. Tangmere Primary Academy is the in-village name. Secondary means Chichester or out east toward Arun. There are no published Ofsted verdicts here to crown any of them or write any of them off. An average picture, decided more by your car than by your catchment.

The first thing to say about any of the names that follow is that being on a school's catchment map does not get you a place at it. Admissions in West Sussex are run by the council and prioritise things like distance from the school gate, siblings already on roll, and named feeder routes. A house near the front door of a popular school still loses to a sibling living a mile further out. Anyone moving for a specific school should confirm the current oversubscription criteria and the most recent year's distance cut-off with the council before they exchange contracts.

Inside the village, Tangmere Primary Academy is the only primary. Beyond the village boundary, the network fans out across the coastal plain. Eastergate CofE Primary School and Aldingbourne Primary School sit immediately east on the Arun side. Boxgrove CofE Primary School and Lavant Primary School cover the north flank. North Mundham Primary School handles the southern villages, with Funtington Primary School and West Dean CofE Primary School further toward the Downs. The wider Chichester catchment adds Birdham CE Primary School, Bosham Primary School, Sidlesham Primary School and Singleton CofE Primary School out toward the harbour and the peninsula. None of those is in this village, but several sit in the same daily-driving radius that families here actually use.

For secondary, the main local options are Chichester Free School, Ormiston Six Villages Academy and The Academy, Selsey. The Six Villages name tells you where it sits, which is closer to Tangmere than the Selsey option in practical terms. Chichester Free School covers both primary and secondary ages, which families with younger siblings sometimes find easier to plan around.

Independent and specialist provision in the wider area runs to Great Ballard School, Westbourne House School and Oakwood School on the prep-school side, with Littlegreen Academy covering specialist need. These are nearby names rather than village names, and the costs are what costs at independent schools are.

The honest verdict is average. One primary in the village, a reasonable spread of options within driving distance, and no published grades sitting on the doorstep to push the decision one way or the other. The choice between them comes down to journey time and conversations at the school gate, which is how most parents end up choosing anyway.
