What are the schools like in Takeley and Little Canfield?

For anyone buying or renting in Takeley and Little Canfield.

The schools around Takeley and Little Canfield are good, and the primaries are better than good. Primary pupils score comfortably above the expected standard in maths. Nearly nine in ten graded schools across the county are good or outstanding. The village has its own primary within walking distance of most homes. The weak spot is the secondary, which needs a car or a bus.

There are four state primaries in the area, and their pupils averaged about 106 in the Key Stage 2 maths tests, comfortably above the expected standard. Takeley Primary School is the village's own, about 20 minutes' walk or eight minutes' drive from the average home in the Department for Transport's 2019 modelling. Roseacres Primary School and The Flitch Green Academy are other nearby primaries for families on the Little Canfield side. With four schools sharing one average, a single strong or weak year group can move the score, so one set of results says more about that cohort than about the school.

Ofsted grades are published for the whole of Essex, and across the county council's area 218 of the 246 graded schools are rated good or outstanding, close to nine in ten. Of those, 22 are outstanding. A further 23 require improvement and 5 are inadequate. The figure covers the whole county, from coastal towns to Chelmsford's suburbs, so it describes the system a Takeley child joins, while the result that matters depends on the school they actually get into.

Places at every one of these schools are allocated by Essex County Council's published admissions rules, so buying near Takeley Primary School does not secure a place there. The usual priorities are siblings and distance, and in a village full of four-bedroom houses bought by families, the sibling list fills up quickly. Each spring the council publishes how far from the gate the last place went, and that figure is worth checking for the exact address against the school a family has in mind. The parents who check it before the move spend less of April refreshing their inbox.

Secondary school means leaving the village. Forest Hall School and Helena Romanes School are the two state secondaries named nearby, about 18 minutes away by car in the 2019 modelling, or 34 minutes by public transport. On foot, the modelled walk is about an hour and a half, and nobody does it. Felsted School is also within reach for families looking at fee-paying options. Families here choose a secondary partly by which school run they can face every morning on the A120.

Takeley and Little Canfield's schools are one of its real strengths. The primaries are good enough that parents worry about getting a place there, and the only real cost is the secondary run.
