Is Swanscombe a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Swanscombe.

Swanscombe is moderately safe, with a crime rate a bit above the rest of Dartford. It runs about 15% higher than across the borough. Damage to property is the category that stands out. Violence makes up a smaller share than it does nationally. Swanscombe's problem is vandals more than muggers.

Police figures for the year from June 2025 to May 2026 put Swanscombe's crime rate at about 134 per 1,000 residents, roughly 15% above the Dartford average. That rate covered 1,059 recorded crimes over the twelve months. The rate is the published one, worked out on the population of the statistical areas, so don't expect the two numbers to divide neatly into each other.

Dartford borough as a whole comes in at about 117 crimes per 1,000 residents over the same year, against Swanscombe's 134. The gap is real and visible on paper. On the walk home from Swanscombe station it is much harder to notice.

Swanscombe is a dense place, with about 6,300 people per square kilometre. Census 2021 put unemployment at about 4% of residents and about 8% of households as overcrowded. More people living close together means more people around to see an incident and report it.

Criminal damage and arson make up about 14% of Swanscombe's recorded crime, against about 7% across England and Wales. Of all the categories, that is the one that stands out. Violence and sexual offences are the largest single group at about 31%. That group covers everything from common assault without injury upwards, and the share is below the 35% national figure. Anti-social behaviour makes up about 19% against 16% nationally, and vehicle crime about 8% against 5%. Other theft (7%) and drugs (4%) are level with England and Wales. A good way to check a particular street is the police's own street-level crime map, looked at month by month. A single bad month can be a one-off, while the same damage showing up month after month on the same road is a pattern.

When a crime is reported, Kent Police charges a suspect in about 16% of cases, against about 12% nationally. That ranks the force sixth of the 42 in England and Wales. Those are the force's figures across the whole county, and they don't tell you how often Swanscombe's own cases end in a charge. Across Kent, about 36% of cases are closed with no suspect identified, so if your car window goes in, plan on paying for the glass yourself.

Swanscombe sits in the middle on safety. Crime is a little above the borough average and the main nuisance is property being damaged, so a buyer should expect some hassle more than danger.
