Is Sutton a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Sutton.

Safe enough by London standards, but busier than the rest of its borough. Crime runs well above the borough average. The mix looks a lot like everywhere else. The extra is mostly nuisance and cars. Sutton is the part of a calm borough where things happen.

The Metropolitan Police recorded 5,831 crimes in Sutton in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, a published rate of about 97 per 1,000 residents. That puts the town roughly 24% above the average for the London Borough of Sutton. Those are the published figures for this patch of the borough, and they cover the town centre along with the streets around it.

To see the gap in actual numbers, the borough as a whole runs at about 79 crimes per 1,000 residents against Sutton's 97. The borough sets a low bar for London, so beating it by a quarter still leaves the town well short of alarming. The road out to Banstead Downs was a haven for highwaymen in the 18th century, so Sutton has been the livelier stretch of an otherwise calm route for a long time.

The town is dense. About 9,700 people live in each square kilometre, unemployment is about 3% and about 8% of households are overcrowded. That describes a crowded, working town with a metropolitan high street in the middle. It does not explain the crime rate, and nothing here says it causes it.

The mix of offences is close to the national pattern, and the differences are small. Violence and sexual offences, a broad legal category that includes common assault without injury, make up 31% of Sutton's crime against 35% nationally, so the town is below the norm on the category that sounds worst. Anti-social behaviour is 19% against 16% nationally, and vehicle crime is 7% against 5%. Public order is 8% against 7%, shoplifting matches the national 8%, and other theft is 6% against 7%. Sutton's crime is a little heavier on nuisance and cars than the average town and a little lighter on violence. A crime map of the streets around the High Street on a weekend evening will show the town centre a buyer actually lives near, which the borough-wide average will not.

What happens after a report is a separate question, and the answer is force-wide. The Metropolitan Police charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which ranks it 33rd of 42 forces. Across the force, about 53% of cases close with no suspect identified. Those are London-wide figures, so they cannot tell you how safe Sutton is, only how likely a report is to end in a charge.

Sutton is a below-par choice for safety within its own borough. The crime is mostly the everyday kind, but there is more of it than in the streets around, and a buyer who wants the borough's calm should look a mile or two out of the centre.
