What are the schools like in Streatham?

For anyone buying or renting in Streatham.

Streatham's schools are among the best reasons to move here. Most graded schools across the borough are rated good or better. Eleven are outstanding. A primary is a short walk from most front doors. The hard part is getting a place, and that is a different problem from finding a good school.

Across Lambeth, the borough that covers most of Streatham, Ofsted has graded 41 schools and settings, and 35 of them are good or outstanding, which is the large majority by any reading. Eleven are outstanding, five require improvement and one is inadequate. Another 32 have no published grade yet, and that tells you nothing in either direction. These counts are borough-wide, so they describe the pool Streatham draws from, and the quality of any one classroom still has to be checked school by school.

Distance helps. The Department for Transport's 2019 modelling put the nearest primary about seven minutes' walk away for the average Streatham home, and the nearest secondary about eleven. Lambeth allocates places through its published admissions rules, so living round the corner from a school you like does not get your child into it, and the council's admissions booklet for the year you apply is a better read than any prospectus. Families learn the difference between near and in when the offer letter arrives.

A few names say something about the area. St Leonard's Church of England Primary School shares its saint with the old parish church, which was rebuilt in 1831 around a Tudor tower, and the school renews itself every September, one Reception class at a time. Sunnyhill Primary School and Granton Primary School are among the other primaries serving the district. Dunraven School and Woodmansterne School both appear on the primary and the secondary lists, so they are the rare local schools where a family can settle the secondary question early. For a faith secondary, Bishop Thomas Grant Catholic Secondary School is the nearby option, and Streatham and Clapham High School carries the district's name on the independent side of the gate.

Schools are where Streatham does best, and the only catch is that plenty of other families have noticed.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
