What are the schools like in St Columb Major?

For anyone buying or renting in St Columb Major.

The schools are good, and the nearest one has the town's name over the door. Primary provision is local and walkable. Maths results across the area sit a little above the national benchmark. Across Cornwall, the overwhelming majority of graded settings are good or better. The awkward part is not quality, it is that secondary age means a car, a bus, or a very early alarm.

At primary level there are four mainstream state primaries in the area, and the key stage two maths average comes in at around 103 against a national benchmark of 100. That is a modest margin rather than a rout, but it points the right way, and in a town this size a couple of strong cohorts and a couple of average ones is the whole story. St Columb Major Academy is the one inside the town itself, part of a multi-academy trust, and for most families here it is simply the school. Beyond it, Mawgan-In-Pydar Primary School sits towards the coast, Indian Queens Primary School and Summercourt Academy cover the ground to the south, and Nansledan School lies over towards Newquay. Modelled journey times put a primary at roughly seven minutes by car and about 13 on foot, which is the rare case of the walk being competitive.

For the wider picture, Ofsted has graded 120 settings across Cornwall, of which 95 are good or better. That is close to four in five, with three rated outstanding, 20 requiring improvement and five judged inadequate. Those counts cover the whole county rather than this town alone, so they describe the odds you face when you widen the search, not the school at the end of the road. A further 113 settings hold no published grade yet, which means untested rather than untrusted.

Secondary is the part that reorganises your mornings. The nearest secondary school sits outside the town, with modelled journey times of about 20 minutes by car and roughly 33 by public transport, so the eleven-plus milestone here is less about results than about who is free at half past eight. Families work it out quickly, usually by the second term, usually with a rota.

Naming a school is not the same as getting into it. Admissions in Cornwall run on the county's own criteria rather than on a line drawn around the town, and living opposite the gates has never been a guarantee anywhere. Oversubscription moves year to year with the size of the cohort, so the sensible move is to check the current admissions position for the specific year of entry before you let an estate agent tell you what your child's school will be. Estate agents have been confidently wrong about catchments since roughly 1907.

Schools are one of the stronger reasons to be here. A well-regarded primary in the town, a county record where good or better is the clear norm, and results that hold their own without anyone needing to pretend otherwise.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
