Is Southall a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Southall.

Southall is less safe than the rest of its borough, though the gap is in nuisance more than in danger. Recorded crime runs about a fifth above the Ealing average. Anti-social behaviour makes up a bigger slice than it does nationally. Violence makes up a smaller one. It is a busy town's crime record, heavy on the crowd and lighter on the front door.

Police.uk recorded 8,567 crimes in Southall in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, a published rate of about 146 crimes per 1,000 residents. That puts it roughly 22% above the average for the London Borough of Ealing over the same twelve months.

The Ealing-wide rate for that year was about 120 crimes per 1,000 residents, so Southall's 146 sits plainly above a borough figure that already includes Acton, Ealing Broadway and the rest of west London's busier patches. The gap is real and it is not a rounding error.

The setting goes some way to describing the place behind the number. Southall averages about 13,200 residents per square kilometre, about 5% of residents were unemployed at the 2021 census, and about 22% of households were overcrowded. Those figures sketch a dense, crowded, working town. They describe the streets the crime happens on, and nothing in them proves why it happens.

The mix is where Southall looks least like the national pattern. Anti-social behaviour accounts for about 25% of recorded crime here, against about 16% across England and Wales. Theft from the person makes up about 5%, against about 2% nationally, and vehicle crime about 8% against about 5%. Violence and sexual offences, the largest category in almost every town and a broad legal grouping that includes common assault without injury, comes in at about 30%, below the national share of about 35%. Public order offences, at about 5% against about 7% nationally, and other theft, about 6% against about 7%, run close to or under the national pattern. Phones and wallets go missing more often here than in most of the country, and people get hurt less often as a share of the total. The police.uk street map for the exact road you are looking at will show whether that pattern belongs to your stretch or to the high road three streets away.

What happens after a report is a separate question, and the answer comes from the Metropolitan Police as a whole. The Met charged a suspect in about 10% of the cases it closed in the year to May 2026, against about 12% across England and Wales, which places it 33rd of 42 forces. About 53% of its cases were closed with no suspect identified at all. That says nothing about how often crime happens in Southall and a great deal about the odds of seeing the person who took your phone in court, which across London are poor.

Southall is below average for safety, with more crime than its borough and a mix tilted towards nuisance and theft over violence. Buyers who can live with a busy town's petty crime will find the rest manageable, and anyone wanting a low crime count should look further out.
