The schools around South Ockendon are good, and in a few cases better than that. Roughly four in five graded schools in the borough are rated good or outstanding. A primary is about eight minutes' walk from the typical home. The secondary walk takes about twenty minutes. The schools are one of the things South Ockendon does well, even if people outside Thurrock rarely hear about them.
Ofsted has graded 24 settings across Thurrock, and 19 of them are rated good or outstanding, about four in every five. Three are outstanding and 16 are good. Four require improvement and one is inadequate. Another 25 settings across the borough have no published grade yet. That says nothing about their quality, only that they haven't been inspected under the current system. Because these counts are borough-wide, a parent comparing two streets in South Ockendon learns very little from them.
The town's own secondary is Harris Academy Ockendon, which joined the Harris group in September 2019 to raise academic results. The school has had two earlier names before the current one. Ormiston Park Academy is the other secondary named locally. The Department for Transport's 2019 model puts the nearest secondary about 20 minutes' walk from the average home, or about 17 minutes by public transport, and the bus figure will have aged as routes have changed. The town has also lost secondary schools before. Culverhouse Comprehensive was demolished in 1992, and an old secondary modern is also gone, so the school has a longer history than any single parent will have known.
Primary schools are closer. The same model puts the nearest one about eight minutes' walk from the typical front door. Kenningtons Primary Academy, Shaw Primary Academy, Benyon Primary School and Somers Heath Primary School are among those in reach, with Holy Cross Catholic Primary School and Bonnygate Primary School nearby. Places at all of them are allocated under Thurrock Council's published admissions rules, so buying the house nearest a school doesn't secure a place there, and a faith school applies its own criteria. With primaries this close together, families who apply to only one school can be caught out when the offers arrive. Look up the latest Ofsted report for the school you're counting on, because the borough's good-or-better figure is a Thurrock-wide count and says nothing about any single school.
For a town better known for its motorway junction than its school gates, schools are one of South Ockendon's real strengths. Most families here will find a well-rated school within a short walk.
