Is South Cerney a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in South Cerney.

Yes, South Cerney is a safe village, and safer than the district around it. Crime runs about a sixth below the Cotswold average. Unemployment is close to nil. Hardly anyone lives in an overcrowded home. Where the numbers here look less good is in what happens after a crime is reported.

Police figures for the year to May 2026 give South Cerney a published rate of about 34 recorded crimes per 1,000 residents, from 240 recorded crimes over the year. That rate is roughly 16% below the average for Cotswold District. The published rate is calculated on its own population base, so it won't match a sum done with the village's own headcount. Most of those crimes didn't touch most households in any given week.

Set side by side, the figures are about 34 crimes per 1,000 people in South Cerney against about 40 across Cotswold District as a whole. In a district that's already calm, the village does slightly better.

The village's neighbourhoods average about 1,270 people per square kilometre, which is fairly dense for a village because of the estates around the old centre. The 2021 Census put unemployment at about 2%, and about 2% of homes were overcrowded. It's an owner-occupied village where nearly everyone has work and nobody is short of space.

Of the recorded crimes, violence and sexual offences made up about 39%, close to the 35% share across England and Wales. That category is broad and includes common assault where nobody was hurt. Anti-social behaviour was about 19% against 16% nationally. Theft other than shoplifting was about 12% against 7%, and shoplifting about 10% against 8%. Criminal damage and arson and public order offences were each about 6%, slightly below their national shares of about 7%. With only 240 crimes in the year, a handful of incidents can move any of these shares by several points. The mix describes one year's run of cases and might look quite different next year. Look up the exact postcode on the police.uk street-level crime map and go back over a few months, because a single street can look very different from the village total.

Reporting a crime is where the picture gets weaker. Gloucestershire Constabulary, which polices South Cerney along with the rest of the county, charges a suspect in about 9% of cases, against about 12% nationally. That puts it 39th of 42 forces. About a third of its cases close with no suspect identified at all. These are force-wide figures and they don't measure how safe the village is. They tell you what to expect if you do need the police, and that answer is less comforting than the crime rate.

South Cerney is a safe place to live, with crime below an already low district average. The weak point is the force's charge rate if something does go wrong, more than the village itself.
