Good, and better than a commuter town has any right to expect. Nearly every graded school is good or better. The primaries post solid maths results. The secondaries hold up too. Parents come for the trains and stay for the schools.
The primaries in the area are where the day-to-day argument gets settled. The 46 mainstream state primaries around here averaged a maths score of about 106 in the end-of-primary tests. The walk is short: the modelled journey to the nearest primary is about 8 minutes on foot. The names on the gates follow the map, from Southcote Primary School in the west to New Town Primary School in the east, and most families will end up choosing between two or three within a short stroll rather than one across town. Which does not stop some of them from driving to the one across town.
The 11 mainstream state secondaries in the area averaged an Attainment 8 score of about 54, the measure built from each pupil's best eight results at sixteen. Reading School and Kendrick School are the names that come up first at dinner parties, and Little Heath School covers the western side towards Tilehurst. The nearest secondary is about 18 minutes' walk away on the modelled figures, long enough for a teenager to invent three excuses on the way.
Ofsted has graded 24 of the 26 graded state schools across the Reading local authority as good or better, which is nearly all of them. Two are outstanding. One requires improvement and one is inadequate. Those counts cover the whole local authority, not only the neighbourhoods on this page, and a further 25 settings have no published grade yet, which says nothing about them either way.
A school's name on a map is not a place in its classroom. Admissions run on the council's rules and each school's own criteria, and none of it bends because the vendor mentioned the school twice during the viewing. Check the admissions rules for the specific school and the specific year before the offer goes in, not after.
The schools are one of Reading's real strengths. Nearly every graded school here is good or better, and the exam scores back that up.
