The schools are one of the best reasons to buy in Purley. The primaries get strong maths results. More than eight in ten of the borough's graded schools are good or better, and none is rated inadequate. There are three state secondaries to choose from, and one of them takes only boys. The trouble here is getting a place, not finding a good school.
Around here there are six mainstream state primaries, and their pupils averaged about 107 in the Key Stage 2 maths tests. Harris Primary Academy Kenley serves the Kenley side, and Margaret Roper Catholic Primary is one of the faith options. The modelled walk to the nearest primary takes about 12 minutes on the Department for Transport's 2019 figures. For most children here, primary school is close enough to walk to, and parents get a car-free school run that a lot of London suburbs can't offer.
The three mainstream state secondaries in the area averaged an Attainment 8 score of about 51 across their pupils. Riddlesdown Collegiate, Thomas More Catholic School and The John Fisher School are the names families plan around, and the modelled walk to the nearest secondary is about 19 minutes. The John Fisher School is a boys' school, so families with a daughter start with one name fewer on the list. The independent sector is also close by, with Cumnor House School and Laleham Lea School among the private options.
Ofsted has graded 56 schools across the London Borough of Croydon, and 47 of them are good or better, which is a large majority. Ten are outstanding, nine require improvement and none is inadequate. Another 56 settings across the borough have no published grade yet, which says nothing either way about how good they are. Croydon Council allocates places using its published admissions rules, so buying the house nearest a named school does not get your child into it, and a faith school's own criteria can count for more than the walk. Read the council's admissions rules for the year your child would start, along with how close the last offer went for that school. Families who skip that step tend to find out how the rules work when the offer letters arrive in spring.
Purley's schools are a real strength, with good-or-better ratings almost across the board and solid results at both ages. Living near the school is the easy part. Getting the place takes more work.
