What are the schools like in Poyle?

For anyone buying or renting in Poyle.

The schools are one of the best reasons to live in Poyle, and most of them are somewhere else. The village primary is a short walk away. Nearly every graded school in the borough is good or better. Secondary school means a car or a bus. Poyle supplies the children, and the rest of Slough supplies most of the classrooms.

There are two state primaries in the area, and their pupils averaged about 106 in the Key Stage 2 maths test. Colnbrook Church of England Primary School is the one Poyle families tend to mean when they talk about the local school, and the Department for Transport's 2019 model puts the nearest primary about six minutes away on foot. Six minutes is close enough that the walk is rarely the reason anyone is late.

Across Slough as a whole, Ofsted has graded 17 of 18 schools good or better, which leaves almost no weak link in the borough's graded list. Six of those are outstanding, none requires improvement, and one is inadequate. Those counts cover the whole borough, so they describe the system a Poyle child joins, and they say little about any single school. Places are handed out under the council's published admissions rules, and living near a school does not by itself secure a place there, so the address on the deeds counts for less than a buyer might hope when the offer letters arrive. A strong borough average still means a family has to win a place at the strong school.

Secondary is where Poyle stops being a village and starts being a commute. The same 2019 model puts the nearest secondary about 54 minutes away on foot, 31 minutes by public transport and 14 minutes by car. The secondary schools in reach include Langley Grammar School, St Bernard's Catholic Grammar School, The Langley Academy and Ditton Park Academy. A child who walked to primary in six minutes finds out at eleven that the school run is now a proper journey, and that someone in the house will be doing the driving.

The most protected school building nearby is Lord Knyvett's old schoolhouse. It is a scheduled monument and now an adult education centre, so the grown-ups got the heritage and the children got the grades.

Schools are Poyle's real strength. The village has a primary on the doorstep and sits inside a borough where good is the normal grade. A family here mostly has to worry about getting a place and getting there.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
