What are the schools like in Pirbright?

For anyone buying or renting in Pirbright.

Pirbright's schools are good, and the county around them is better still. There are two state primaries to choose between. More than nine in ten graded settings across Surrey are good or outstanding. Secondary school means a car journey or a bus. The schools are fine. Getting a place is the hard part.

The village has two mainstream state primaries, and their average end-of-primary maths score is about 103. Pirbright Village Primary School is the one most families here mean when they say "the school", and the average home is about a 19-minute walk from its nearest primary. Normandy Village School serves the Normandy side of the area. Beyond that, Bisley CofE Primary School and Worplesdon Primary School are among the other primaries in reach. Knowl Hill School is a small independent school for children with dyslexia, which is unusual to find in a village of this size.

Ofsted's grades cover the whole of Surrey, not just Pirbright, so treat them as the county's standard rather than a verdict on the village. Of the 159 graded settings, 147 are good or outstanding, which is more than nine in ten, and 30 of them are outstanding. Seven require improvement and five are inadequate. Settings that haven't been graded are left out of these figures, and that says nothing bad about them. The odds are strongly in a parent's favour, which in Surrey mostly means competing against other parents who have read the same reports.

Secondary school is where the car comes in. The average secondary is about a 14-minute drive from home, 27 minutes by public transport, or an hour on foot. Hardly anyone walks that. Ash Manor School and Gordon's School are among the secondaries in reach, and Tomlinscote School is another option families look at. Which one you get depends on the council's admissions rules, not on which one you prefer.

A school's name on this page isn't a promise of a place. Admissions go by each school's own criteria, and the fact that a school is nearby tells you it exists, not that your child will get in. Check the admissions rules for the exact address before you commit to a house. Every year some buyers pay extra for a house near a school, then learn when the offers come out that their child didn't get a place.

The schools are one of Pirbright's real strengths, as long as you plan for the drive to secondary and check admissions before you buy.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
