Is Northleach a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Northleach.

Northleach is a very safe place to live. Crime runs at about half the rate for the wider district. Only a few dozen crimes are recorded in a year. Hardly anyone is out of work and hardly any homes are overcrowded. The police force's record on charging people is worse than the town's record on crime.

Gloucestershire Constabulary recorded 43 crimes in Northleach in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, a published rate of about 22 per 1,000 residents. That is roughly 47% below the Cotswold district average. Numbers this small move with a handful of incidents, so one bad month shows up, though a gap this wide would take more than one bad month to close.

For the Cotswold district as a whole, the published rate over the same twelve months was about 40 crimes per 1,000 residents, against Northleach's 22. The district is hardly a hotspot to begin with. Northleach comes in well under even that. A town of 86 listed buildings, a conservation area and fields on every side doesn't give the police much to write up.

Its census areas average about 1,700 people per square kilometre, a figure that measures the built-up streets and ignores the farmland around them. About 2% of residents are unemployed and about 2% of households are overcrowded. That describes a small, comfortably-off town where people own their homes and stay put. It doesn't explain the crime rate, but it fits it.

What happens after a report is a separate question, and the answer comes from the force, not the town. Gloucestershire Constabulary charges a suspect in about 9% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 39th of 42 forces over the year to May 2026, with eight months of outcomes reported. About 33% of its cases close with nobody identified. That says how well the force follows up, not how much crime there is here, and Northleach supplies very little of the force's caseload. The police.uk street map shows recorded crime around any postcode for the past few years, and for most of this town the map is mostly empty.

Northleach is about as safe as a town gets: crime is rare, and the only weak number here belongs to the county's police.
