New Southgate is greener than its traffic suggests. A park is a couple of minutes from most front doors. The brook is a short walk beyond that. Pubs are scarce. The parks are the main reason people choose it.
The average home here is about 130 metres from public green space, and there are about 32 green spaces within a kilometre. Brunswick Park runs north towards East Barnet, Arnos Park lies to the east, and the Millennium Green is by the station on Station Road. Grovelands Park and the grounds of Broomfield House are further out, and Alexandra Palace is on the horizon to the south. A dog owner here has plenty of choice before the lead even comes off.
Water is about 440 metres from the average home, and there are about 24 bodies of water within a kilometre. Most of that is Pymmes Brook, which the Waterfall Walk follows north through Brunswick Park and another path follows south through Arnos Park. It is a brook, and the walk alongside it is good.
The nearest National Cycle Network route is about 5.7 kilometres away on average, and no postcode here is close to one. The cycle track running along the North Circular and the shared path through Brunswick Park cover local cycling better than the national network does. There is no ancient woodland here.
The food hygiene register lists 144 shops, 4 pubs and 15 restaurants. With 222 offices on the same records, New Southgate has more places to answer email than to have a drink afterwards. For a proper night out, people head to Palmers Green, Southgate or Muswell Hill.
Barnet's fine-particle pollution averaged about 8.5 micrograms per cubic metre in 2024. That is a borough-wide figure, and it does not show how much worse it is on the streets beside the main road.
The area has busy roads, interwar and Edwardian terraces, a mainline station, and parks along the brook. Bounds Green merges into it to the south and Arnos Grove to the east, and they share the same mix. It has the green character of an outer suburb with the density of an inner one.
Private gardens add about 44,000 square metres per 1,000 residents, measured across the area's neighbourhoods. Almost half the homes are flats, so a lot of residents have no garden of their own, and the parks matter more for that reason. For a flat, check whether the garden on the particulars belongs to the flat itself or is shared with the whole building.
The council's business rates list counts 653 rateable premises in the area, with offices the largest category at 222 and shops next at 144. The rest are spread across smaller categories. These are premises on the valuation list and include empty ones, so they show the area's shape more than which businesses are open today.
Of the 124 food businesses rated by the Food Standards Agency, about 57% hold the top hygiene score and about 4% sit at the bottom of the scale. Most places to eat here pass the inspection comfortably.
No area of outstanding natural beauty, site of special scientific interest or ancient woodland overlaps New Southgate. That is normal for a London suburb. Its green space consists of parks, the brook and private gardens, with no protected countryside.
For outdoor space, New Southgate is one of the strongest choices in north London. Almost every home has a park within a few minutes' walk and a brook path just beyond it.
