What are the schools like in Mitcham?

For anyone buying or renting in Mitcham.

Mitcham's schools are one of the best things about it, and almost nobody outside it knows. Every graded school in the borough is good or outstanding. Primary maths results come in above the expected standard. The nearest primary is a short walk for most families. The town has the reputation; the classrooms have the results.

Around here there are 15 mainstream state primaries, and their pupils averaged a maths score of about 106 in the national tests at the end of primary school, comfortably above the expected standard. The Department for Transport's 2019 modelling put the nearest primary about seven minutes' walk from the typical home. Names in the area include William Morris Primary School, which carries the name of the man who opened a factory on the Wandle at Merton Abbey, and Benedict Academy. The famous print works got the Liberty silk; the local primaries got long division, and from the scores the long division is going rather well.

The secondary picture is smaller. Two mainstream state secondaries serve the area, Harris Academy Merton and St Mark's Church of England Academy, and their pupils averaged an Attainment 8 score of about 51, the measure that adds up results across eight GCSE subjects. The same 2019 modelling put the nearest secondary about a 14-minute walk away. With only two on the doorstep, families tend to read the second school's prospectus as closely as the first, and the evenings in Year 6 get long.

Merton, whose schools these Ofsted counts cover rather than Mitcham's alone, has 19 schools with a published overall grade, and all 19 are good or outstanding. Seven of them are outstanding, and none are rated requires improvement or inadequate. Another 27 settings hold no published grade yet and are left out of that count. A clean sheet like that removes the usual excuse for driving past three schools to reach a fourth.

Merton allocates places under its own published admissions rules, so living near a school named here does not secure a place at it, and the council does not publish a catchment line on a map for buyers to rely on. Ask Merton's admissions team how far last year's offers reached for the school you have in mind, and compare it with the walk from the front door you are looking at. Cricket Green School and Lavender Lodge School also sit in the area outside the mainstream figures above, which matters for families who need something other than a standard place. The house two streets nearer the gate usually costs more, and the admissions rules do not always notice the difference.

Schools are one of Mitcham's real strengths, and the one most likely to surprise anyone who judged the town before looking at it.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
