Milton-under-Wychwood and Shipton-under-Wychwood is home to well-educated owners in their fifties who arrived and never left. Seven in ten households own their home. The typical resident is past fifty. Over four in ten adults have a degree. Young adults are thin on the ground, and most of the ones who grew up here have left.
The 2021 census counted about 3,300 people in 1,417 households, and it is the source for every population figure below. About 73% of households own their home. About 12% rent privately and about 13% rent from a social landlord. With so few private lets, most homes that come up are for sale, and very few go to tenants.
The median age is 51. Only about 17% of residents are aged 25 to 44, the age when most people are building careers, starting families and buying a first home. The villages raised their children well, and the children grew up and moved to places with nightlife and starter flats.
The Office for National Statistics models household income here at about £64,700 a year before tax, for the financial year to March 2023, averaged across the wider statistical area that includes both villages. That is a modelled figure for a period that is now a few years old, and gross is always the more flattering version of what reaches the bank account.
Households come in every shape, but the balance leans older. About 28% of households are one person living alone, and about 17% are a pensioner living alone, a group counted inside that 28%, not on top of it. Couples with dependent children make up about 20% of households, and lone parents about 6%.
The education mix is high. About 43% of residents aged 16 and over hold a degree or equivalent, and about 14% have no formal qualifications. Full-time students make up about 1%. The two villages have a parish church by a Gothic Revival architect, and the residents with degrees would mostly know who he was.
Who lives here is one of the villages' real strengths: settled owners, comfortable incomes and long-term neighbours. Anyone looking for young neighbours or a busy rental market will have to look in the towns down the road.
