The schools in Milton-under-Wychwood and Shipton-under-Wychwood are good, and the primary results back that up. The village primaries finish above the standard maths mark. Nearly nine in ten graded schools across the county are good or better. The secondary is a drive away in the next town. Parents get strong schools and a lot of driving.
There are three state primary schools in the area, and their pupils averaged a score of about 105 in the end-of-primary maths tests. Wychwood Church of England Primary School is the one named after the villages, and by the Department for Transport's 2019 journey-time model the typical home is about 9 minutes from a primary by car or about 22 minutes on foot. The Gothic Revival architect G.E. Street, who designed the parish church, also designed the original village school. That school has since closed, and the church is still standing.
Ofsted has graded 108 of the 121 schools it has rated across Oxfordshire as good or outstanding, so nearly nine in ten. Eleven of them are outstanding, ten require improvement and three are inadequate. Another 151 settings in the county have no published grade yet and are not counted here. A county-wide figure tells you the area is well run, but it can't tell you what goes on inside any one classroom in Shipton.
Places are allocated under Oxfordshire County Council's published admissions rules, and a church school's own criteria can weigh more than the walk to its gate, so buying near a school does not secure a place. The useful check is to read Wychwood Church of England Primary School's admissions criteria for your year group, and to find out how far its last places went the previous year, before an address becomes a plan. Parents who assume being close settles it learn otherwise when the offer letter arrives in spring.
At secondary age, Chipping Norton School is the school the area plans around. The 2019 transport model puts it about 18 minutes away by car and nearly half an hour by public transport, and the walk is well over an hour and a half. The same model is six years old, and bus services out here have been thinning since it was drawn up. For a lot of families that turns the school run into a lift.
The primaries do well and the county record is strong, so schools are one of the best things about living here. Parents who don't mind driving their teenagers to the next town will find very little to complain about.
