What are the schools like in Martock?

For anyone buying or renting in Martock.

Martock's schools are a primary-school story with a gap where the secondary should be. Three primaries serve the village and the parishes around it. One of them carries the village name. Nothing at secondary level sits inside the area at all. Straightforward at five, a standing lift arrangement at eleven.

On the wider grading, Ofsted has published overall effectiveness for 140 settings across Somerset, the local authority Martock sits in, and 101 of them are good or better. That is just over seven in ten. Five are outstanding, 32 require improvement and seven are inadequate. Another 81 settings carry no published grade at all, which means not yet inspected or not graded rather than quietly failing. Those counts cover the whole county, so they set the background rather than describe any particular classroom in the village.

Martock Church School is the one with the village's name over the door. Ash Church of England Primary School and Kingsbury Episcopi Primary School cover the neighbouring parishes, both of them small village schools serving small villages, which is the arrangement this part of Somerset has always run on. Hill View School is also in the area. That is the full local roster, and in a place this size a full roster is four names, not a shortlist.

Living near a school is not the same as getting into it. Somerset runs the admissions and applies its own criteria, and the distance from your front door to the gate is one input among several rather than a guarantee. Particulars that name a primary school in the second paragraph are describing geography, not entitlement, and the offer letter in the spring does not read estate agent copy. Check the admissions arrangements for the actual year of entry before the number of bedrooms makes the decision for you.

Secondary is the part that costs you time rather than money. No secondary school sits within the area covered here, and the Department for Transport's modelling puts the nearest one about 15 minutes away by car, about 43 by public transport and around 75 minutes on foot. A primary school, by the same modelling, is about eight minutes by car and about 16 on foot. So the school run stays short for six or seven years and then turns into a proper daily commitment, which is worth pricing into the second car before you price it into the mortgage.

Taken together the schools are a modest strength rather than a headline: better than average on the county grading, close at hand while the children are small, and reliant on somewhere else entirely once they are not.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
