What are the schools like in London Colney?

For anyone buying or renting in London Colney.

London Colney's schools are good, and the results back that up. The primaries do well in maths. The secondaries post solid exam scores. Across the county, nine in ten graded schools are rated good or better. A family moving here for the schools has little to worry about.

There are seven mainstream state primaries in and around London Colney, and their pupils average a key stage 2 maths score of about 106. London Colney Primary & Nursery School is the one with the village's name on it. Bowmansgreen Primary School and Colney Heath Primary School are among the others parents in this corner of St Albans district weigh up. With only seven to choose from, families in Napsbury Park and the old village end up applying to the same few schools.

At secondary level there are two mainstream state schools in the area, and their pupils average an Attainment 8 score of about 60. Samuel Ryder Academy appears on both the primary and secondary lists, so a child could in principle start there in reception and still be walking through the same gates at sixteen. Beaumont School and Nicholas Breakspear Catholic School are among the wider St Albans options families consider. With two state secondaries locally, the school-gate debate about secondaries is short, and the one at the admissions office runs longer.

Hertfordshire's inspection record, which covers the whole county and not just this village, shows Ofsted rating 203 of its 227 graded schools good or outstanding, or close to nine in ten. Forty of those are outstanding. Another 21 require improvement and three are inadequate, which means a county average hides some schools a family would want to avoid.

Hertfordshire County Council hands out places under its published admissions rules, and living near a school does not guarantee a place there, however short the walk from the front door. Look up the council's admissions criteria and last year's allocation figures for the specific schools you want, and do it while the house is still a listing rather than a completion date. Families who skip that step usually find out how the system works the first spring their child applies.

London Colney's schools are one of its real strengths, solid at primary and at secondary, and families can choose a house here without bargaining against their children's education.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
