Who lives in Lindford, Hampshire?

For anyone buying or renting in Lindford, Hampshire.

Lindford is mostly lived in by people who have finished moving house. Nearly eight in ten households own their home. The typical resident is in their late forties. Only about a fifth of households are couples with children at home. It's a village of people who unpacked a while ago.

Owning is the norm, not the aspiration. At the 2021 Census about 78% of households owned their home. About 11% rented privately and about 10% rented socially. With only about one household in ten renting privately, the "let" boards come round less often than the bin lorry.

The age profile matches. The median age is 47, and people aged 25 to 44, the usual first-house-and-first-baby years, make up about 24% of residents. It isn't a retirement village, and it isn't a starter village either. Most people here are in the middle stretch of life, doing the loft conversion they promised themselves years ago.

Money isn't the pressing problem it is in many places. The Office for National Statistics modelled gross household income, before tax, at about £64,500 for the financial year to March 2023. That's a figure for that year, not today's. It's an average across the area, so it covers a comfortable majority and some households managing on a good deal less.

The households themselves are a mix, not a single type. About 20% are couples with dependent children and about 7% are lone-parent families. Listings love the phrase "family village", but families with children at home are about a quarter of households. The rest are couples whose children have left and people living alone.

The fuller breakdown, like every population figure here, comes from the 2021 Census. About 24% of households are one person living alone. Within that, about 12% of all households are a pensioner living alone. That's part of the one-person figure, not an extra group on top of it. Couples with children make up about 20% and lone parents about 7%. The single pensioners are a reminder that the bungalows and the ground-floor flats aren't there for decoration.

Qualifications are spread across the range. About 34% of residents aged 16 and over hold a degree-level qualification, about 13% have none, and about 1% are full-time students. With so few students, the village doesn't empty out at the end of term, because there's no term to speak of.

Lindford's population is solidly middling: settled owners, middle age, comfortable incomes and a spread of qualifications, nothing unusual in any direction. The main thing that changes here is who's doing the extension this year.
