Is Kidlington a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Kidlington.

Yes. Kidlington's crime rate runs well below the district it belongs to. It comes in roughly a quarter under the Cherwell average. Violence makes up a slightly larger share of crime here than nationally. Anti-social behaviour makes up a much smaller one. The biggest worry the numbers point to is what happens after a crime is reported, which is a matter for the county's police force and has nothing to do with the streets themselves.

Police.uk records about 58 crimes per 1,000 residents in Kidlington over the year to May 2026, roughly 24% below the local-authority average. That comes to 1,090 recorded crimes across the twelve months. Because the figure covers a full year from June 2025, one bad month cannot drag it into a different story.

Across the whole of Cherwell, the rate for the same year is about 76 per 1,000. Kidlington's 58 and the district's 76 come from the same police force over the same twelve months.

The neighbourhoods behind those numbers are fairly compact and comfortably off. Average population density is about 4,190 people per square kilometre, unemployment is 2% and about 3% of households are overcrowded. That is what Kidlington looks like. None of it, on its own, explains the crime figure.

The mix of crime is close to the national pattern, and the one big difference is in Kidlington's favour. Violence and sexual offences make up 41% of recorded crime, against about 35% across England and Wales. That category covers everything from common assault without injury upwards, and it is the largest category almost everywhere. Shoplifting is 9% against 8% nationally, other theft about 9% against 7%, public order 8% against 7%, and criminal damage and arson 7%, the same as the national share. Anti-social behaviour accounts for 9% of the total, against 16% nationally. Kidlington's share of nuisance calls is around half the national figure.

What happens after a crime is reported is set by the county's police force. Thames Valley Police charges a suspect in about 9% of cases, against about 12% nationally, putting it 37th of 42 forces in England and Wales, and about 37% of its cases close with no suspect identified, in the year to May 2026. Those are force-wide figures covering Kidlington and every town and city the force polices. They say nothing about how often anything happens on a given street here. The force's headquarters is in Kidlington, on the site where Oxford Zoo stood from 1931 to 1937. Having the headquarters nearby does not change the charge rate. The police.uk map shows recorded crime street by street and is worth checking for the exact road you are thinking of buying on.

Safety is one of Kidlington's real strengths. The streets are calmer than the district average, and the weakest number belongs to the force that polices them.

Check it for your address. These figures describe the wider area, not a single street. For recent crime near a particular address, use the map on police.uk.
