What are the schools like in Ivybridge?

For anyone buying or renting in Ivybridge.

Good, and the secondary is why the surrounding villages point their children at this town. Four in five graded settings across the county come out good or better. The college runs a sixth form. Its catchment reaches from Dartmoor down to the coast. Most parents here did not so much choose the school as buy a house inside its boundary.

Ofsted has graded 172 settings across Devon, and 138 of them, about four in five, are good or better. Three are outstanding. Thirty-one require improvement and three are inadequate. A further 135 settings hold no published grade at all, which is an absence of a verdict rather than a bad one. These are county-wide counts rather than a scorecard for this town, so they tell you the odds rather than name the school.

Which matters, because a school near the house is not the same as a school with a place in it. Admission arrangements change from one year to the next, and a catchment this large means a lot of families having the same idea at the same time. The property listing will name the nearest school in bold. The listing is not the admissions authority.

Ivybridge Community College is the town's only secondary, and it is the institution the whole area organises itself around, sixth form included. Children from Ugborough, Cornwood, Ermington and Modbury end up there, which is a catchment that would be a bus network anywhere else. Underneath it sit the town's primaries: The Erme Primary School, Manor Primary School, Stowford School and Woodlands Park Primary School, spread across a town that grew fast enough in the late twentieth century to need all four. The surrounding villages each keep a primary of their own, which is the sort of arrangement that survives only where the village fights for it.

The schools are one of the very few things about this town that need no defending. Families who arrive for other reasons usually work that out inside a term, and then find themselves reluctant to leave a catchment they only stumbled into.
