Is Islington a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Islington.

Islington is about as safe as the rest of its borough, which is inner London's average and nothing lower. The crime rate is high by national standards. It is a little above the borough's own. Violence makes up a smaller share of crime here than in most of the country, and pickpocketing a much bigger one. Islington is crowded, a lot of things happen in it, and some of those are thefts.

The Metropolitan Police recorded 24,376 crimes in Islington over the twelve months from June 2025 to May 2026, and the published rate for the area is about 200 offences per 1,000 residents. That is roughly 6% above the average for the London Borough of Islington, which is the right yardstick for a place this central. Six per cent is a gap worth noting but small enough to call close, given that the area includes the King's Cross end and the main roads, where a lot of people pass through.

Across the London Borough of Islington as a whole, the rate over the same twelve months was about 188 offences per 1,000 residents, against about 200 for this area. Both figures are well above what most of the country records, and neither is surprising for a part of London that commuters, shoppers and late-night crowds pass through every day.

The area packs in about 19,800 people per square kilometre on average, so a lot of people share each street, and each one can be a victim or a witness. About 4% of working-age residents were unemployed at the 2021 census, and about 10% of households were living in overcrowded homes. None of that explains the crime figures on its own. It does describe a crowded inner-city area where a high count comes with the territory.

The mix of crimes tells a reader more than the total does. Violence and sexual offences make up about 20% of recorded crime here, against about 35% nationally. That category covers everything from common assault without injury upwards, so a smaller share is good news. Anti-social behaviour is about 19%, against 16% nationally, and shoplifting is about 9% against 8%, both close to normal. Theft from the person is where Islington stands out, at about 11% of crime against about 2% nationally, along with other theft at about 12% against 7%. Drug offences are about 6%, against 4%. In Islington, keep your phone in an inside pocket on Upper Street. For a feel for a particular street, the police's own crime map shows recent incidents by location, and a few minutes on it says more than an hour of opinions.

The Metropolitan Police Service charges a suspect in about 10% of the cases it closes, against about 12% across forces nationally, and ranks 33rd of 42 forces on that measure. About 53% of cases are closed with no suspect identified. These figures cover the whole Met, from outer London to the West End, and say nothing about how safe Islington is. They describe what follows a report, and the most likely outcome of a stolen-phone report is a crime reference number for the insurer.

Islington is a middling place for safety. It carries the crime rate a crowded inner-London area can expect, with less violence than the national mix and more theft than anywhere sensible would want.
