What are the schools like in Hilden Park?

For anyone buying or renting in Hilden Park.

Hilden Park's schools are good, and the inspection record supports that. Nine in ten graded settings are good or better. A primary school is a short walk from most homes. The secondary run takes longer. The schools are not the problem here. The admissions form might be.

Ofsted has graded 245 settings across Kent, and 221 of them are good or better, so roughly nine in every ten. Of those, 38 are outstanding. Another 21 require improvement and 3 are inadequate, so the county is not faultless. These counts cover the whole of Kent, not only Hilden Park. That is the fairest comparison available, and Kent comes out of it well. A further 255 settings have no published grade yet. They are ungraded, not failing, and they sit outside the figures above.

Distance divides the two phases. The Department for Transport's 2019 modelling puts the nearest primary about 12 minutes' walk away, or about 8 minutes by car. The nearest secondary is about 44 minutes on foot, around 26 by public transport and about 12 by car. The primary years are walkable. The secondary years mean either a car or a bus timetable that parents quickly learn to distrust.

The name on the gate is the obvious place to start. Hilden Grange School and Hilden Oaks Preparatory School and Nursery both carry the neighbourhood's name, and parents hear about them in the first week. For state primaries, the nearby names include Stocks Green Primary School, Cage Green Primary School and Hildenborough Church of England Primary School. At secondary level, Leigh Academy Hugh Christie and Hadlow Rural Community School are the names that come up. Several other primaries sit within reach in the surrounding villages and in Tonbridge. They fill the gaps, but none makes the choice easier.

A school's name on a map guarantees nothing. Admission depends on each school's own criteria, and in practice parents are competing on distance, siblings and faith criteria, not on what the listing says. Buyers who assume the nearest school is theirs because they can see its roof tend to learn otherwise in April. Check each school's admissions arrangements and last year's allocations before the offer, not after it.

Schooling is one of Hilden Park's real strengths. Kent's inspection record is good, the primaries are close, and the only real difficulty for families is getting a place.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
