What are the schools like in Haddenham, Buckinghamshire?

For anyone buying or renting in Haddenham, Buckinghamshire.

The schools are one of the best things about Haddenham, especially at primary age. The village runs its own infant, junior and church primaries. Results at the end of primary come in comfortably above the expected level. Across the county, most schools that inspectors have graded come out good or better. Secondary school is where the walking ends and the timetable starts.

There are two mainstream state primaries with published Key Stage 2 results in the area, and their average maths score was about 106. Haddenham Community Infant School takes children through the early years, and Haddenham Community Junior School takes them on from there. Haddenham St Mary's Church of England School gives families a church option without leaving the village. The surrounding villages have their own primaries, so a child in Long Crendon or Cuddington does not have to come into Haddenham at five. In the Department for Transport's modelled journey times from 2019, the nearest primary is about 16 minutes' walk away on average, or about eight minutes in the car. Most children here can still walk to school, which is the last time anyone will say that about their education.

Ofsted has graded 94 settings across Buckinghamshire, and 80 of them were good or outstanding, which is a bit over four in five. Nineteen of those were outstanding. Eleven required improvement and three were inadequate. The figures cover the whole county, from the Chiltern towns down to the Vale, and Haddenham's schools are only a few lines in that list. The three inadequate settings are real, but they are spread across a large county, and a parent here is unlikely ever to drive past one.

Secondary school changes the logistics. The Department for Transport's 2019 modelling put the nearest secondary about 68 minutes away on foot, about 30 minutes by public transport and about 13 minutes by car. Lord Williams's School and Princes Risborough School are the obvious names for families here, with Waddesdon Church of England School and The Aylesbury Vale Academy also within reach. Buckinghamshire Council allocates places under its published admissions rules for each school, so living close to one of them does not guarantee a place, and church schools usually set their own criteria on top. Read the admissions policy for the school you actually want and how places were allocated last year, and do it while the house is still an idea. A child who walked to the junior school in a quarter of an hour finds out in Year 7 what a school bus is for.

Schools are one of Haddenham's real strengths, and the walk to primary is the part parents will remember most fondly. The only real cost is the drive once the children reach secondary age.
