What are the schools like in Goring?

For anyone buying or renting in Goring.

The schools in Goring are good, and there's hardly any choice between them. The primaries turn in strong maths results. There's one state secondary, and its results are solid. Almost nine in ten schools across the county are rated good or better. Getting a place is rarely the problem. Finding an alternative is.

Around here there are four mainstream state primaries, and at Key Stage 2 they average a maths score of about 104. The one carrying the village's name is Goring Church of England Aided Primary School, a short walk for most families. The Department for Transport's 2019 modelling puts the average walk to the nearest primary at about 14 minutes. South Stoke Primary School and Whitchurch Primary School are in the wider mix, small village schools where the class photo fits on one page. Four primaries and a strong average is a better position than most places with forty.

Secondary is one school. Langtree School is the only mainstream state secondary in the area, with an Attainment 8 score of 58. It's a strong figure, and it's also the only figure, so your child's secondary education and the village's secondary statistics amount to the same thing. The same 2019 modelling puts the trip at about 15 minutes by car or about 30 by public transport. Families who want an alternative look at the independent sector, where names like The Oratory School and Pangbourne College sit within reach. The state system here gives parents a good option, but only the one.

Ofsted's picture is drawn across the whole of Oxfordshire, not only this corner of it. Of the 121 settings in the county with a published grade, 108 are rated good or better, which is almost nine in ten. Eleven are outstanding, ten require improvement and three are inadequate. That's a county-wide spread, so it tells you about the system your children would be in rather than about any school on your street. Settings without a published grade are left out of those counts entirely.

None of this guarantees a place. Admission depends on each school's own criteria, and naming a school on a property listing doesn't reserve a desk in it. Check the admissions rules for the specific school and year you need before paying for the house on the strength of it. The estate agent isn't the admissions authority, even if the listing reads that way.

Schools are one of Goring's real strengths. The primaries perform well and the one secondary holds its own, and the only thing missing is a second option to choose from.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
