What are the schools like in Four Marks?

For anyone buying or renting in Four Marks.

The schools around Four Marks are good, and the numbers back it up. Nearly nine in ten graded schools across the county are good or better. There's a primary in the village itself. Secondary means a drive or a bus. The weak point is the journey, not the teaching.

Ofsted has graded 211 schools across Hampshire, and 185 of them are good or outstanding, which is close to nine in ten. Of those, 27 are outstanding and 158 good. At the other end, 16 require improvement and 10 are rated inadequate. Those counts cover the whole county council area, not Four Marks alone, so they describe the system a family here buys into rather than the school at the end of the road. Another 226 settings have no published grade yet, which says nothing about them in either direction.

The primary carrying the village's name is Four Marks Church of England Primary School, and next door along the ridge sits Medstead Church of England Primary School. For secondary, the schools on the local list are Amery Hill School and Eggar's School. Naming a school on a property page does not get a child into it. Admissions are decided by the council's published rules each year, and no house listing, however confident its wording, can promise a place. Parents who treat an estate agent's "close to good schools" as a guarantee learn the difference in the spring, when the offer letters go out.

Getting there is where Four Marks shows its village character. In the Department for Transport's 2019 model, the nearest primary was about 8 minutes by car, 21 by public transport and 24 on foot. The nearest secondary was about 16 minutes by car and 35 by public transport, and about 90 minutes on foot. So nobody walks to secondary school from here. The school run is a car run, and the queue at the gate forms accordingly.

About 24% of households here are couples with children, so the school run is a big part of village life rather than a niche concern. The parents who do best are the ones who read the admissions rules before the listing particulars.

The schools are one of Four Marks's real strengths: strong across the county, with a village primary on the doorstep. What you pay for it is the drive to secondary.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
